‘G.o F.igure’ is a work in progress show put on by a group of 6 second year students at the University. Running over the course of two days, the exhibition showcases the current status of work for our tutor group, whose work all seems to carry similarities in themes or methodology. For the show I created new piece of work as a culmination of my progress so far this year. 'Devoid Formation’ is a piece of work that showcases the written word in an ambiguous arrangement, whilst maintaining the regularity through the grid format made during the weaving process. Inspired by ideas generation in my studio space, I used layers of masking tape to form the basis of the work, and by weaving the pieces together it created a solid structure yet with a quality of fabric. By using the tape to write on, much like shredding pieces of paper each line of text becomes individual to itself, holding the weight of the text on its own as opposed to part of a larger piece of writing. The process of making the strips and then weaving them was one of ritual, acted out over and over again until the structure had found its conclusion. Essentially the process was a system, one of creation and at the same time abstraction. The words are layered and then overlapped; they became part of the work but at the same time unreadable. They lose their original meaning and are transformed into abstract shapes. There is an invitation for the viewer to become the reader to try and interpret the work, but the meaning originally put into the work in the text is lost, it is up to the viewer to establish a new meaning through their own ‘reading’ of the work. Devoid Formation: To does text, writings. Shredding of with, however, and creates necessary and ultimate shapes. Point seen approach based, yet creating woven. Using allowed takes with this, and has directions formatting interaction.
